Tennessee Senate Votes to Secure Workers' Right to Secret-Ballot Elections

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Workers for Opportunity released the following statement from Senior Policy Advisor Vincent Vernuccio today after the Tennessee Senate passed SB 650, securing workers’ right to decide union representation through secret-ballot elections in workplaces receiving state economic incentives:

The union-organizing method known as card check strips Tennessee workers’ right to a private vote on union representation. In a right-to-work state like Tennessee, workers shouldn’t be subjected to coercion, deception or intimidation by union organizers.

With the full passage of Senate Bill 650, Tennessee lawmakers are one step closer to securing secret-ballot protections to ensure workers’ decisions about unionization stays private. bill, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, will also guarantee that workplaces receiving state taxpayer dollars are free from strong-armed union tactics – getting Tennessee taxpayers out of the business of funding union coercion.

Workers for Opportunity is proud to play a part in Senator Johnson’s vision to enact secret-ballot protections for Tennessee workers, because the right to vote is just as important as the right to work.

The TN House of Representatives passed companion legislation, HB 1342, on March 16.
