Arkansas Embraces Worker Freedom

Arkansas is taking a stand on worker freedom.

Late last week, the Arkansas Senate filed a bill that would empower teachers and stop taxpayers from being the bills collector for union dues. SB 473, filed on March 23, would prohibit employers from collecting dues on behalf of a union. Unions would instead be required to collect dues from their members using their own time and resources.

With this bill, Arkansas shows its dedication to protecting public-sector workers. It also joins the ranks of states like Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee, which have been working toward similar reforms this session.

The surge in labor reform efforts across the country sends a clear message: Workers deserve to be informed of their rights and to be firmly in charge of their own hard-earned paychecks.

State governments should never be forced to fundraise for unions, especially when their values and political philosophies don’t align. That’s why SB 473 and similar reform bills in other states require unions to lean on their own resources, rather than those of the government and the taxpayer.

Arkansas legislators’ leadership is clear evidence: worker freedom is on the move across the country.
